March is a special time in the library world, a time synonymous with honoring and celebrating Women’s History. As educators, we have the unique opportunity to inspire and empower students by sharing the stories of influential women who have left an indelible mark on our world. Luckily, there’s an array of children’s picture books and resources that make it easy for teachers to present these stories in creative and low-prep ways.
Leaders Doing Headstands: Unveiling Power Before Fame
The Leaders Doing Headstands series of books has some great stories, focused on powerful individuals before they were famous. One title I use each year is When Amelia Earhart Built a Roller Coaster. This book emphasizes the sense of adventure and bravery that Earhart possessed. Those same characteristics would later serve her well as a female pilot breaking barriers for women.
Following this story, I often share the Amelia Earhart video on Brainpop.
Little Golden Books Biography Series
One set of books I have been loving recently is the Little Golden Books Biography Series. A lesson I have just added to my rotation of stories during Women’s History Month is based on the life and talent of Lucille Ball.
I will be reading the Lucille Ball Little Golden Book this month, then showing students this clip of the I Love Lucy show, bringing her talents and humor to life.
Student-Directed Research: A Template for Empowerment
My upper elementary students are capable of independent research, so I use this template with them.
I utilize the educational platform Epic Books for Kids. Students can choose books and videos to learn more about a variety of women from all walks of life. On the template they write down a fact that “stuck with them” about each woman. With their research being very student directed, it is easier to maintain their interest and engagement.
